The Seasonal Forestry Assistant – CFI will work primarily in collecting forest inventory data at permanent sample plots. Specific and Primary Duties of the CFI Seasonal Forester: • Navigate to permanent sample plots using GPS devices, and traditional forestry tools. • Collects continuous forest inventory data (CFI) from permanent sample plots including tree measurements, forest condition assessment, forest understory assessment, and coarse woody debris measurement. • Uses field computer and software to collect forest inventory data and processes forest inventory data with a desktop computer. Forestry Assistants work outdoors in all types of weather; work in isolated areas; may be exposed to the hazards of power tools and equipment such as chainsaws and hoists and travel for job related purposes. This Forestry Assistant may occasionally assist in the preparation of forest management plans; assists in the interpretation of aerial photos, GPS and GIS data, and other cartographic work regarding forests; assists in the inventory of natural resources and the establishment and maintenance of state forest boundary lines. The Forestry Assistant may also occasionally • Assist in planning and supervision of timber stand improvement work by state forest crews and private contractors. • Assist in the sale of wood products including preparing silvicultural prescriptions, minimizing adverse environmental impacts of harvesting, and ensuring contractual compliance by private contractors. • Cooperate with state and municipal authorities during emergencies and natural disasters such as forest fires, wind or ice storms, and insect infestations. Perform related duties such as maintaining records and attending staff meetings.
