The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is hiring for a Forester III that will serve as the Stewardship Forester for the Barre District office. This position is responsible for state lands planning and management activities in central Vermont. Responsibilities include coordination of an intra-agency district stewardship team, the development and implementation of Long Range Management Plans, and supervision of permanent and temporary staff assigned to state lands management. This position oversees a range of state land management activities. This includes vegetation management, recreation management, invasive plant control, access to state lands through road and trail management, licenses and special use permits, and public safety.
The position requires skills in written and oral communication in a wide range of settings from formal public involvement meetings to outdoor field sessions. Other essential skills for this position include natural resource planning and management, GIS experience, database management, field navigation, leadership and management, meeting facilitation, and working knowledge of basic software with an ability and willingness to learn.
The successful applicant will have a bachelor’s degree in forestry or a natural resources field AND 4 years of experience at a professional level in a natural resources field OR a master’s degree or higher in forestry or a natural resources field AND 2 years of experience at a professional level in a natural resources field OR 1 year experience as a Forester II. Consideration will be given to those with either forester certification in a US state or current Certified Forester (CF) status through the Society of American Foresters. The person will qualify for a Vermont Pesticide Applicators certificate and Vermont Forester license within 6 months of employment.
