The Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is recruiting for a Watershed Forester. The successful candidate will work in the Watershed Forestry Program on a team responsible for supporting water quality on forestry operations and administration of the Intent to Cut Notification (Heavy Cut) programs in central and northeast Vermont. Job duties include supporting ANR’s state lands team on planning and implementing water quality projects; supporting the development and management of ANR Lands water quality infrastructure data; providing technical assistance to loggers, land managers, and foresters to support implementation of the Acceptable Management Practices; reviewing applications and harvest plans for compliance with state laws; investigating complaints related to potential water quality violations associated with timber harvesting; conducting forest inventory, and providing training to staff, land managers, foresters, and loggers related to watershed forestry programs.

The position requires knowledge and experience in implementing water quality practices on forestry operations, including bridges, culverts, and road building, as well as the ability to interpret silviculture, forest management plans, and to conduct forest inventory. Capabilities with database management and GIS systems are required. Also required are strong organizational, interpersonal, and both written and oral communication skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to work in forested environments. Candidates must be willing to travel across the state. The position will work out of both the St. Johnsbury and Barre, VT district offices.
