Seasonal Forestry Technician – Concord, NH

The Forest Society is currently seeking two full-time, temporary, 12-week summer forestry technicians to perform the following tasks:

Founded in 1901, the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (The Forest Society) is one of the nation’s oldest, largest, and most successful state-based land conservation and forestry organizations. A full-time staff of 40 administers programs in land protection, conservation education, environmental advocacy, and sustainable forest resource management. Reservation Stewardship staff currently oversees the management of 195 properties totaling over 58,000 acres, located in 105 NH communities.

Job Responsibilities (may include some to all of the following):
• Perform annual boundary line maintenance (60 miles)
• Perform post-harvest surveys to measure regeneration, snags and downed woody debris
• Assist with timber stand improvement projects
• Engage in everyday stewardship activities, which could include trail work, recreation management, property maintenance, or other needs identified by Forest Society Reservation Stewardship staff
• Assist staff and volunteers with running workdays and trainings, including Monadnock Trails Week
• Monitor Reservations or Easements as part of our Land Trust annual monitoring responsibilities

Desired Qualifications and Experience:
• Ability to work long hours in rough conditions including heat, rain, bugs and rugged terrain
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and be proficient with hand tools (axe training a plus)
• Ability to work alone and navigate to remote locations throughout NH with maps, compass and GPS
• Experience in natural resources field data collection and familiarity with forestry field tools (clinometer, Biltmore stick, d-tape, data collectors)
• Ability to identify common NH tree and species
• Ability to use a chainsaw & other power tools/equipment (brush saw, cordless drill) is helpful but not required
• Ability to use ESRI ArcGIS 9/10 software (helpful) and phone applications such as Avenza and Gaia
• Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, vehicle insurance, a cell phone and ability to travel throughout New Hampshire
• Outdoor skills and savvy
• Ability to do an occasional overnight or weekend

• Hourly Wages ($14.50/hour)
• Workers Compensation Insurance
• Mileage reimbursement at the current federal mileage rate for use of a personal vehicle
