The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation is recruiting for a Forest Economy Specialist (Forester III). The successful candidate will work as part of a team within the Forest Economy Program of the Division of Forests to support forest-based businesses and enhance efforts to ensure robust in-state markets for forest products. The Forest Economy Program works to support and grow those industries which provide markets for the products of forest management, in turn supporting the work of foresters, loggers, and forestland owners to maintain and enhance healthy forests.
The position requires broad experience and/or coursework in: Forest management, wood technology, forest operations, forest products, forest statistics, forest economics, and forest entomology and pathology. Thorough understanding of various forestry and forest industry production practices: safe harvesting practices and techniques, sawmilling, log and lumber scaling and grading, wood manufacturing practices, business management tools and techniques. A working knowledge of wood energy technology and applications, including fuel types, characteristics and production; conversion technology; and air quality impacts and controls. A working knowledge of federal, state, and local permitting requirements specific to wood using and wood energy industries is also required.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and diplomatically with individuals and groups with widely varying viewpoints are critical to this position, as is the ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients, co-workers, and supervisors. The position also requires skills in project management, meeting facilitation, public speaking and presentation development, grant writing, fiscal management, contracting and accounting, use of MS Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Also required are strong organizational, analytical/quantitative, written and oral communication skills, working independently and collaboratively, and working in forested and industrial environments.
This position requires a State of Vermont Forester License. Candidates must be willing to travel throughout the state. The position will be housed in the Montpelier office. The position may be responsible for contracts and grants out in support of programmatic needs.
