The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is excited to recruit for a Forester II position in the Division of Forests. This position is based within the Forest Protection program and will expand our field‐based forest health and wildland fire work in northwestern Vermont.
The successful candidate will support long‐term plot monitoring, insect trapping projects, regional forest health projects, and assist with forest health-related work on state lands.

This position will also provide outreach and assistance to landowners with tree and forest health concerns. Wildland fire duties will be expected as well, including local management of the town fire warden program, wildland fire response, participating in prescribed fires, and training local fire departments in wildland fire control concepts. The successful candidate will be asked to have or obtain Vermont-specific licenses in forestry and pesticide application. Ability to maintain or become red card certified preferred.

Applicants with an understanding of forest health concepts including invasive plants, experience in forest and tree insect and disease identification, as well as experience with fire suppression techniques and an understanding of fire behavior will be highly considered. The position must use skills in oral and written communication in settings ranging from classrooms to outdoor field sessions. Other skills include GIS, database management, field navigation, working knowledge of basic software with an ability to learn.
This position will be based out of the Essex Junction, VT regional office.
