The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is a dynamic agency, and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, trails, and parkways.
In addition, DCR has conservation programs that enhance and protect natural resources throughout the Commonwealth. DCR’s Bureau of Forestry and Fire Control offers programs, technical assistance, and grants for landowners in Massachusetts for the stewardship of our forests, both rural and urban, to conserve forests, maintain clean air and water, and enhance wildlife habitat for future generations.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Service Forester.
General Duties of Service Foresters:
The Service Forestry Program provides outreach and education to private landowners and municipalities to aid them in making educated decisions about their woodlots as well as protecting our valuable forest resources through fair and consistent application of environmental regulations.
Service Foresters work in both an office and field environment. Service Foresters are assigned a field district. This job posting is for field district 11, https://www.mass.gov/doc/service-forester-district-map/download . District 11 is a rural mainly forested area, field work will comprise at least 60% of a work week with time for outreach and programming at the district and state level, including the Timber Harvest License program.
Within the specified district, as well as in collaboration with others on a statewide level, a Service Forester provides technical assistance to landowners, and site visits to active timber harvests for environmental compliance. They may write articles or create material about forestry subject matter for technical and popular audiences, and work with municipalities on forestry related projects. Current statewide program initiatives are focused on climate, carbon and working with timber harvesters on BMP’s related to climate change. With oversight from the program director, Service Foresters have a high degree of autonomy for their day-to-day field and office work, so must be a self-starter with a high degree of organization and accountability.
A Service Foresters must be independent worker with forestry field experience, technical forestry skills, knowledge of silviculture, and other natural resources (such as wildlife or forest health), as well as solid computer and communication skills. They must be comfortable working with the general public, members of town boards, loggers, and foresters.
A Service Forester has related duties such as maintaining records (both electronic and paper), submitting time sheets or mileage logs, and attending a variety of meetings both virtual and in-person.
