Description:
The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation is excited to be building our Forest Economy Team and is recruiting for a Wood Energy & Forest Products Specialist. This position will support forest product businesses and enhance efforts to ensure robust in-state markets for forest products. Duties will include advising on the forest economy, collaborating with state agencies and private sector partners to reduce market barriers to adopting wood energy applications, and retaining and expanding forest product businesses.
Work at this level involves complex projects and a high degree of independence, responsibility, and accountability. The position requires broad experience or coursework in forestry or a biological-life or physical science, engineering, or an environmental or natural resources field and a working knowledge of various forestry and forest industry production practices, as well as a working knowledge of wood energy technology and applications.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and diplomatically with individuals and groups with widely varying viewpoints are critical to this position, as is the ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients, co-workers, partner organizations, and supervisors. In addition, the position requires skills in project management, meeting facilitation, public speaking and presentation development, grant writing, fiscal management, contracting and accounting, and MS Excel and PowerPoint.
Candidates must be willing to travel throughout the state. The Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation currently operates in a hybrid working environment, supporting remote work and Core Days in which all staff are in the office. Permission to participate in telework is applied for on an individual basis. The position’s duty station is located in Montpelier.
